Balancing Rules

The Composition Tracking Analysis rule collects inputs from data references or from another Case of an associated analysis rule case. This associated analysis rule Case cannot be a Composition Tracking Analysis case. The Composition Tracking application has three balancing rule options:

  • Option 1: Solve with Reconciled Source Values – Reconcile Rule

This rule requires a source analysis rule (mass or volume balance). The reconciled values of the source analysis rule Case are used in the calculation of the material compositions in the composition tracking case. When these data are collected from the associated analysis rule, a second mass or volume balance is not executed because the source analysis rule Case already provides the reconciled balance data. After the collection of reconciled values from the source analysis rule Case is completed, the composition solver runs and calculates the compositions.

For an analysis to collect Attribute values from a mass or volume balance case, these Attributes require the “SF_CompTrackCase” category.

See Composition Tracking – Required Source Analysis Rule.

  • Option 2 – Reconcile and Solve – Rule 1

This rule is based on using measured values from a mass or volume balance and performs a mass or volume balance reconciliation in which inventories, receipts and shipments are not allowed to have a reconciled adjustment (tolerances set to zero). If a remaining imbalance exists after the reconciliation, loss transfers are created from the out-of-balance object (node, inventory, or unit) to a receipt/shipment object named “LossPool” to arrive at a reconciled balance without residual imbalances. If a loss transfer is created as a result of the rule, this transfer is added to the Case and the database. If the loss transfer is created for an inventory (tank), the transfer inherits the material, temperature, and density of the inventory. The measurement for the transfer is the value of the imbalance from the mass or volume balance. After the above process is completed, the composition solver runs and calculates the compositions.

The measured values can be collected from a source analysis rule Case or from execution of the Collect Input stage of the mass or volume balance, in which Case a source analysis rule is not needed. If a source analysis rule is used, the Attributes being collected require the "SF_CompTrackCase" category. See Composition Tracking – Required Source Analysis Rule.

  • Option 3: Reconcile and Solve – Rule 2

This option is the same as Option 2 except that only receipts and shipments are not allowed to have a reconciled adjustment when performing the mass or volume reconciliation. Inventories are allowed to have reconciled corrections.
